I have two Windows 2000 Servers on my network. One is the domain controller and also provides DNS services. The other is only there to run VPOP3.

A few days ago, the DC popped up a message telling me that the DNS event log was full. On checking, I noted that almost all the events were event 5504 caused by the machine that's running VPOP3. Text of these messages is "The DNS server encountered an invalid domain name in a packet from <VPOP3 machine IP>. The packet is rejected." and I'm getting over 30 of these an hour.

I've done what I can think of to troubleshoot this. I set logging to full in the properties sheet of the DNS server, but I'm not sure how to interpret the results. I stopped VPOP3 for about an hour and a half this afternoon (but left the computer otherwise running). The 5504 events stopped while VPOP3 was shut down but resumed almost immediately when I restarted VPOP3.

I've run a virus scan, which came back negative.

Can anyone tell me how to identify the invalid domain name that's being requested and/or give some other hints to help me troubleshoot this?

TIA,

Well I have finally got around to going for the upgrade and went to install on Monday after reading from the wiki that it can just be installed over the top.

Well that plan went out the window. After the install the VPOP3 service would constantly restart.

I stopped the service and tried running it as an application and it gets to the greylist part and then hangs.

I have for now reverted to 2.6.0j (build 2471). Will try again soon but thought I would see if there are any problems regarding this I should be aware of.

Thanks,
